Hi, I'm Valerie,
I am a printmaker specializing in relief printmaking and lithography, with a strong focus on hand-printed techniques. I am interested in representations of the human form. My process begins with simple figurative sketches that I transform by drawing and rearranging, then by adding or subtracting throughout the platemaking and printing process. I love working in layers, building ink tones one on top of another. I get as much joy experimenting in my home studio as creating finished pieces.
Born in Ottawa, Canada, I earned a BFA from Concordia University in 2008. In 2010, I was honored to be selected as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholar, which led me to Tokyo. There, I completed an MFA in printmaking at Tokyo University of the Arts, specializing in ball grain plate lithography. Printmaking remains my primary form of expression, with a focus on hand-printed techniques. Over the years, I have held solo exhibitions in Canada, Japan, Australia, Norway, and Korea, and I’ve participated in numerous group exhibitions and artist residency programs worldwide.
